This official statement of military service and death furnished 25 July 1947 to Mrs. Marion Rowley Piercey, P.O. Box # 141, Brielle, New Jersey. BY AUTHORITY OF THE SECRETARY OF WAR: EDWARD F. WITSELL
"The official records show that Charles W. Rowley, Army serial number 6 703 960, enlisted in the Regular Army on 6 January 1930 at Buffalo, New York and was honorably discharged 9 January 1933 at Fort Jay, New York, by reason of expiration of term of service. He again enlisted 18 April 1934 at Syracuse, New York and was honorably discharged 8 July 1936 at Brooklyn, New York, for the Convenience of the Government, having less than one year to serve. He again enlisted on 13 February 1940 at Buffalo, New York, at which time he gave his home address as 296 Walnut Street, Lockport, New York, and his date and place of birth as 31 July 1911, Franklinville, New York. He left the United States and was received at the Post of Manila, Manila, Philipine Islands 20 May 1940 and assigned to Company F, 31st Infantry Regiment. He was discharged as an enlisted man and appointed a Second Lieutenant 14 March 1942, and assigned serial number 0 890 467. He was killed in action 24 October 1944 in the South China Sea as the result of the sinking of a Japanese ship on which he was being transported while a Prisoner of War.
